Strawfree.org – A Straw Free Revolution

StrawFree.org is an organization based in Huntington Beach focused on creating solutions to for the global plastic problem – one straw at a time. These solutions involve educating about plastic pollution through social media, hosting outreach events at places such as schools and music festivals, and, manufacturing sustainable bamboo straws. All proceeds from the sale of bamboo straws go directly towards education and outreach efforts.
The team at StrawFree.org wants to encourage people to refuse plastic straws whenever they can. It can be as simple as ordering a drink at a restaurant with “no straw, please” or, opting to use reusable straws.

Editor's note:  Bamboo Drinking Straws, handmade by volunteers at StrawFree.org are now available on the StrawSleeves website and Etsy Shop!

About The Straws
The problem with plastic straws is that they are not a renewable product. Plastic straws depend on oil to be manufactured and shipped, and are 100% not recyclable anywhere. The fact that 500,000,000 straws are used a day in the US has resulted in a massive plastic pollution problem in our oceans – ocean wildlife are very susceptible to consuming plastic straws and other plastic-related items, in fact thousands of animals die every year from ingesting plastic.

StrawFree.org’s bamboo straws aim to be the sustainable counterpart to plastic straws. Bamboo is reusable, highly renewable, and easy to find – all of the bamboo used to make the straws are locally sourced from houses that grow ornamental bamboo in the Orange County area. The bamboo that is harvested is dead bamboo that would have otherwise been sent to the landfill, so by repurposing the bamboo, less waste is being created.
